LAWRENCE, Kan. — The future was on full display at Allen Fieldhouse Monday night, as freshman guard Darryn Peterson poured in 21 points in 22 minutes to lead No. 19 Kansas past Green Bay 94-51 in a lopsided season opener kuathletics.com. Peterson scored on effortless drives and three-point shots, sparking the Jayhawks to a 48-27 halftime lead and electrifying the home crowd in his collegiate debut. By the final buzzer, Kansas had emphatically introduced its new cast of players and put the college basketball world on notice with a dominant all-around performance.
Peterson wasted no time making an impact. His first bucket, a three-pointer from the top of the key less than two minutes in, gave Kansas an early lead it never relinquishedespn.com. The 6-foot-5 freshman’s smooth shooting and two quick steals set the tone; he amassed 18 points by halftime to go along with 3 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals in the opening periodespn.com. “(He) scores easy, makes it look easy,” Kansas head coach Bill Self said of Peterson’s debut burstwww2.kusports.com. Though Peterson sat out most of the second half due to some precautionary cramp treatment, his efficient 7-of-11 shooting (3-of-7 from beyond the arc) spoke volumes about the scoring punch he bringskuathletics.comespn.com.
If Peterson provided the flash on the perimeter, sophomore center Flory Bidunga supplied the force in the paint. The 6-foot-10 Bidunga muscled his way to a career-high 23 points on 9-of-11 shooting and sank 5 of 6 free throwsespn.com, showcasing vastly improved foul shooting after some preseason struggles. Time and again Bidunga ran the floor for dunks or carved out deep post position, often thanks to Peterson or senior guard Melvin Council Jr. pushing the pace. Early in the game, Peterson rewarded Bidunga’s rim-running with a long outlet lob that the big man flushed with authoritywww2.kusports.com, bringing the crowd to its feet. The duo combined for 34 points in the first half alone, shooting 12-for-16 from the field and a perfect 8-for-8 from the linekuathletics.com. “I think me playing to my athletic ability really helped me tonight,” Bidunga said, reflecting on bouncing back from a shaky exhibition outingwww2.kusports.com. Indeed, Bidunga made his first nine shot attempts and blocked three shots, controlling the interior on both endss3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com.
Kansas’ revamped roster featured plenty of other contributors on offense. Council, a transfer guard who has assumed a vocal leadership role, stuffed the stat sheet with 10 points, 5 rebounds and a team-high 4 assists in 26 minuteswww2.kusports.com. “I got that advantage on any team with my speed,” Council said of his ability to penetrate in transition and find teammates, “so once I open up, (I) open up for Flory, DP (Peterson), Kohl, Tre, anybody”www2.kusports.com. Junior wing Tre White added 9 points in his Kansas debut, and freshman forward Bryson Tiller chipped in 7 off the benchkuathletics.com. In fact, nine Jayhawks made their official KU debuts Monday, and all nine found the scoring columnkuathletics.com – a remarkable infusion of new talent for a program reloading on the fly. Kansas shared the ball unselfishly (20 assists on 33 made field goals) and took care of it impeccably, committing only 3 turnovers all gameespn.comkuathletics.com. The 20 assist / 3 turnover line is virtually unheard of; it marked the first time since at least 1989-90 that Kansas had 20+ assists with three or fewer turnovers in a gamekuathletics.com. For an offense integrating so many fresh faces, the chemistry and efficiency on display were striking. The Jayhawks shot 56.9% from the floor as a teamespn.com, their best single-game shooting percentage in nearly a years3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com, while racking up 94 points without ever appearing out of control. “He was really good… Flory was good and I thought Melvin was good,” Self said, lauding his new stars’ debutswww2.kusports.com. If the season opener is any indication, this Kansas squad has no shortage of weapons and playmakers on the offensive end.
Equally impressive for Kansas was its effort on defense and in transition. The Jayhawks’ length and athleticism overwhelmed Green Bay, holding the Phoenix to just 28.6% shooting from the fieldespn.com (16-of-56) and 51 points total – the fewest points Kansas has allowed in a season opener since 1993kuathletics.com. Kansas controlled the glass 44-26espn.com, with Bidunga (6 rebounds) and freshman Kohl Rosario (5 rebounds, including a team-high 3 offensive boards) leading the way insides3.us-east-2.amazonaws.coms3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com. When the Jayhawks did force misses or seven steals, they were off to the races. Kansas outscored Green Bay 24-2 on fast-break pointsespn.com, turning nearly every Phoenix mistake or long rebound into an opportunity to run. On one sequence in the first half, freshman Jamari McDowell stripped Green Bay’s Marcus Hall and immediately ignited a quick outlet that ended in a breakaway dunk for transfer wing Nicolas “Tre” Whitewww2.kusports.com. Plays like that became a theme: Kansas converted 17 points off turnovers while yielding only 2 in returnespn.com, showcasing a disruptive defense that fueled easy offense.
Perhaps most encouraging to Self was how his team responded around halftime – often a danger zone for lapses when holding a big lead. Any notion of a Phoenix comeback was squashed immediately after intermission when Kansas opened the second half on a 7-0 blitzespn.com. Freshman guard Kohl Rosario capped that run by pulling up for a transition three-pointer from the left wing, prompting an exuberant double-fist-pump from Self on the sidelinewww2.kusports.com. The trey pushed Kansas’ lead over 30 points and underscored the team’s commitment to staying aggressive. Kansas’ largest lead eventually ballooned to 43 points – fittingly the final margin – as the defense continued to contest everything and the offense kept flowingespn.com. Green Bay’s top scorer, Marcus Hall, managed 17 points but was largely contained aside from a few tough jumpersespn.com. No Phoenix player reached double figures until deep into garbage time. By night’s end, Kansas had racked up 8 blocked shots and 6 stealsespn.com, with eight different Jayhawks recording at least one block or steal. Bidunga anchored the middle with three rejections, marking the 14th multi-block game of his young careers3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com, while Rosario and Tiller each swatted a shot as well. On the perimeter, Peterson and Council harassed Green Bay’s ball-handlers into rushed decisions and combined for four steals. The result was a suffocating defensive effort that left Green Bay scoreless for stretches of four minutes or more in each halfwww2.kusports.comwww2.kusports.com. “Defense to offense – that’s when we’re at our best,” Council noted, and Monday provided plenty of evidence. The Allen Fieldhouse crowd of 15,300 roared its approval throughout, even giving a standing ovation when 26-year-old Canadian import Nginyu Ngala buried a late shot-clock three-pointer off the benchwww2.kusports.com. It was the 53rd consecutive season that Kansas won its home openerkuathletics.com, and the home faithful were treated to vintage Jayhawk defensive intensity and fast-paced fireworks in this one.
For all the positives, Self and his staff will have plenty of teaching points from the film. Kansas started just 3-of-14 from three-point range in the first halfespn.com, as some early open looks failed to fall. The Jayhawks eventually found a better rhythm from deep (finishing 10-for-27, ~37%espn.com) once players like Rosario and Ngala heated up, but cold stretches like those could be problematic against stronger opponents. Perimeter shooting was an Achilles heel at times last season, and while Peterson’s arrival (he hit three treys) should boost spacing, consistency from role players will be key. Self will also point to a couple of lapses in focus. Late in the first half, with Peterson and Council resting, Kansas’ offense stalled and its defense relaxed – allowing Green Bay to string together a modest 6-0 runwww2.kusports.com. The drop-off prompted an irate Self to substitute a completely fresh five into the game to regain control. Similarly, midway through the second half, the Jayhawks endured a prolonged scoreless spell despite their huge leadwww2.kusports.com. The offense grew stagnant with reserves on the floor, and only after sophomore guard Jayden Dawson knocked down two free throws and Tiller threw down a dunk did Kansas snap out of the droughtwww2.kusports.com. Such lulls didn’t matter in a 40-point blowout, but the coaching staff will emphasize sharper execution and sustained effort regardless of lineup or score. “We’ve got to play to our standard, not the scoreboard,” veteran forward Nick Timberlake (who sat out injured, if applicable) might remind his teammates – a common Self mantra in past seasons.
There are also minor health and rotation wrinkles to iron out. Peterson asked out of the game early in the second half due to cramping, the same issue that hampered him in an exhibition last weekwww2.kusports.com. With the result well in hand, Kansas played it safe; Self noted postgame that Peterson “said he felt it coming on” and would have tried to push through if the game were closerwww2.kusports.com. The freshman’s explosive play is clearly vital to this team, so ensuring he stays hydrated and in peak condition will be important as his minutes ramp up. The Jayhawks also deployed a number of unconventional lineups as Self experimented with combinations. At one point in the first half, he had all three of his freshman forwards on the court together, and later he gave seldom-used reserves extended runs. Those trial-and-error stretches led to some choppiness, but they also yielded valuable experience for the nine newcomers. “The second five didn’t gel there for a bit, but that’s something we’ll work on,” Self said in so many words. Kansas will want its bench to develop reliability, as quality depth could be a differentiator come March. Even after winning by 43, the Jayhawks left the arena sounding like a team that knows it can be better – a scary thought for future opponents.
Taking care of business against an overmatched mid-major is one thing; duplicating it against college basketball’s blue bloods is another. This dominant opening act comes just before a major early test: Kansas travels to face No. 25 North Carolina on Friday in Chapel Hill, a top-25 showdown that will quickly gauge the Jayhawks’ mettle on the roadespn.comcbssports.com. It will be the first time Kansas has ever played UNC in the Dean Smith Center, and the game pits two tradition-rich programs both looking to rebound from first-round NCAA Tournament exits last spring cbssports.com. For Kansas’ freshmen, the hostile environment and uptick in competition will be a trial by fire – a far cry from Monday’s comfortable home confines. “We’ll learn a lot more about ourselves in that one,” Self hinted, knowing a hostile crowd and a talented Tar Heel squad await. The turnaround is quick, and the stakes only climb from there: Kansas’ non-conference schedule is loaded. On November 18, the Jayhawks will face Duke at Madison Square Garden in the Champions Classic, setting up a blockbuster duel between Peterson and Duke phenom Cameron Boozer – two freshmen projected as top picks in next year’s NBA Draft cbssports.com. Just days later, Kansas heads to Las Vegas for the Players Era Festival, where Notre Dame and Syracuse (and potentially other high-major opponents) lurk on back-to-back nights cbssports.com. The following week, defending national champion UConn comes to Allen Fieldhouse (Dec. 2) for a heavyweight tilt cbssports.com, and the annual Border War against Missouri resumes Dec. 7 in Kansas City cbssports.com. The gauntlet continues with a tricky true road game at NC State in mid-December reddit.comcbssports.com, a matchup spiced up by Wolfpack forward Darrion Williams having spurned Kansas in the transfer portal. In short, Kansas will be stepping up in weight class repeatedly over the next six weeks.
How Monday night’s performance translates to those marquee games will determine if the Jayhawks can fulfill their lofty ambitions. The overwhelming athleticism, ball movement and defensive intensity they showed against Green Bay are all positive indicators. Kansas looked every bit the part of a top-20 team with the potential to climb higher – a group blending youth and experience that, even in Game 1, seemed to already have an identity of playing fast, unselfish, and relentlessly attacking on defense. Yet, some of the cracks that appeared (streaky outside shooting, moments of lost focus) could be costly against the likes of UNC or Duke. As Self often says, the margin for error shrinks when the competition improves. The coming non-conference crucible will reveal how quickly this new-look roster can grow up. Big 12 play will be another beast entirely, with new league members like Houston (a two-time defending Big 12 champion and national runner-up) and BYU featuring elite talent that will challenge Kansas come January cbssports.comcbssports.com. But long before conference play, Kansas’ mettle will be tested by one of the toughest December slates in the country.
If the Jayhawks can replicate Monday’s balanced dominance against stronger foes, they’ll firmly reassert themselves as national contenders – and erase the sting of last year’s premature March exit. If not, the early schedule will expose exactly where improvement is needed for Kansas to reach its ceiling. In the meantime, Jayhawk fans can savor a promising start. Peterson’s star potential, Bidunga’s growth, and a bevy of new contributors have injected fresh excitement into Lawrence. One game into 2025-26, Kansas has shown it can overwhelm the teams it’s supposed to. Far bigger stages await, but the opening act couldn’t have been much more convincing espn.comcbssports.com. The journey from season opener to season defining is underway – and the Jayhawks look ready for the spotlight.
